Photos and Artwork That Create Balance in Your Home

Your walls don’t have to choose between photos and artwork.

A well-curated space can bring together photo prints, paintings, illustrations and other artwork to create a home that feels personal and collected over time. The key isn’t making everything match, but finding visual connections that allow different pieces to work together.

Whether you’re displaying family photographs, artwork you’ve collected or photographs from your travels, here are a few ways to bring them together.

Start with what you love

Before worrying about colours, frames or layouts, start with the pieces you genuinely enjoy looking at. A memorable holiday photograph, favourite landscape, family moment or piece of artwork can all have a place on your wall, even if they weren’t originally chosen as a collection.

The key is finding a common thread that brings different pieces together. Look for shared colours, tones, subjects or moods. A black-and-white photo print can work alongside a minimalist illustration, while warm-toned landscape photography can complement artwork featuring earthy colours. Similarly, botanical photographs paired with botanical illustrations or coastal photography alongside artwork inspired by the ocean can create a cohesive collection.

Your pieces don’t need to match. Finding subtle connections between them is what makes a collection feel considered while still reflecting your personal style.

Don’t be afraid to mix framed photos and artwork

A gallery wall doesn’t have to consist of matching frames in identical sizes. Combining different frame styles can add character and help distinguish individual pieces.

For example, pair the clean finish of a Contemporary White Photo Frame with the natural warmth of a Classic Wooden Photo Frame, or introduce the handcrafted character of an Earth Gallery Frame, made from natural and reclaimed timber.

You can also use a Ballyhoo Photo Frame, with its slim black profile and wide white mount, to create contrast alongside more substantial frames.

The key is to create some consistency. Stick to a complementary colour palette, such as natural wood, black or white, while allowing the styles, sizes and finishes to vary.

Alternatively, consider printing photos and digital artwork on canvas

Not every photograph needs to be displayed behind glass. Printing your photography onto canvas offers another way to bring favourite images into your home and can work particularly well for landscapes, travel photography and images with strong textures.

A large canvas can make an impact on its own or act as an anchor piece surrounded by smaller framed photographs and artwork.

For a more finished look, consider a framed canvas. For example, The Albatross is a printed canvas and finished in a Kiaat frame. The warm, natural timber complements the photograph while giving it the presence of artwork.

Whether you choose a traditional photo frame, an unframed canvas or a framed canvas, the presentation can completely change how a photograph feels within a space.

Play with scale and spacing

Mixing large and small pieces creates visual interest and gives the eye somewhere to move around the wall.

Try using one larger photograph or artwork as an anchor, then build around it with smaller pieces. Think about the wall, the furniture around it and the space between each piece as part of the overall composition.

Before putting anything on the wall, lay your pieces out on the floor and experiment with different arrangements. You can also use paper templates to test the layout before committing to it.

Let photography make your home personal

Artwork can bring colour, texture and personality into a room, but photography can bring your own experiences into the space.

A photograph of somewhere you’ve travelled, a family moment, a beloved pet or an everyday moment you don’t want to forget can make your home feel uniquely yours.

And the photograph doesn’t need to be technically perfect to deserve a place on the wall. Often, the images we value most are the ones connected to a memory.

Printing these photographs gives them a physical presence rather than leaving them hidden among thousands of images on your phone.

Let your collection evolve

Your home doesn’t need to be finished all at once.

Add a photograph after a memorable trip. Frame a piece you’ve had tucked away for years. Turn a favourite image into a canvas when you’re looking for something with more impact.

There are no strict rules about what belongs together. If you love the pieces and can find a visual or personal connection between them, that’s often enough.
