Are you curious about the origins of this rhyme? The words come from a children’s nursery rhyme, A-Tisket A-Tasket, that originated in the USA in the 1800’s. It was sung while children danced in a circle, one of the kids ran on the outside of this circle and dropped a handkerchief. The nearest child would pick it up and chase the dropper who, if caught, was either kissed or had to join the circle or tell the name of their sweetheart.
An earlier version of the rhyme goes something like this:
A-tisket a-tasket
A green and yellow basket
I wrote a letter to my love
And on the way I dropped it,
I dropped it,
I dropped it,
And on the way I dropped it.
A little boy he picked it up and put it in his pocket.
